What will you do if you receive an sms….

SCAM 1

….which says that you have won RM20,000??

SCAM 2

You should first google it!!!

SCAM Google

I received a SMS from a number +60178348519. It says:

“TAHNIAH! No. sim Card Honlink anda Tlh memenangi Cabutan bertuah Cek tunai bernilai RM 20,000 dari POWER ROOT SDN BHD. sila hubungi 006285283374444. Terima kasih”

Unfortunately, I didn’t won any contest. This is one of the common scam that have been rampaging in Malaysia for quite sometimes. This kind of sms normally have a few common trait:-

i) Large sum of money, normally above RM10,000 to invoke greediness.

ii) Name of reputable company such as Petronas, Celcom and in my case, Power Root to lower guard and suspicious

iii)Foreign and oversea phone number to avoid Malaysian Law.

When you receive any sms saying that you have won something from some contest, it is wise to first check whether it is a scam or not. For me, the easiest way to google it. I have found numerous websites reporting that the sms is a scam. A blogger named Jing has his share of experience. Luckily he did not get conned but he make 7 minutes call to the oversea number and it cost him RM19.

SCMA 3

I have received sms from Maxis weeks ago, warning against scamming sms. If you really won any contest, the organiser will tried their best to contact you and you would not have to pay any single cent for it. Yup. Not a single cent. If they asked you to pay them certain amount of money for processing fee, most probably those are scam.

Always be alert to current issues and practice precaution. Do not be greedy or tempted by value of the prize.

Hi zita, I don’t think there is any security problem with Maxis. As you can see, the sms came from valid Malaysia handphone number. We just have to take precaution and remember that there is no free lunch in this world.

  9. willchua Says:

Well, becareful with all these few “You have won something” sms. Just remember that if you have never submit to those contest, how can you win anything from them? And if you really did win, you should never ever have to pay a single cent for whatever fee. The sponsor should have cover all those fees including sending them over to you.

  20. krist Says:

  21. willchua Says:

    hi krist,
For precaution purpose, I would recommend you to approach your bank and tell them your situation. Perhaps they will reissue another ATM card for you.

It is extremely risky to reveal your banking information to 3rd party. Even if you received call or sms from such and such bank official, avoid reveal the information to them and tell them that you will personally go to the bank to solve whatever issue mentioned by them.

Be more careful in the future.
